In this economy it’s almost easier to make an opportunity than it is to find one (especially in Michigan!). It’s especially hard to spend that money when the wealth of information we have through the Internet costs only $29.95 a month, compared to $29,995 a year at the nearest State University. The ability to educate ourselves is proving to be the greatest tool we have today.

Bit Social is a social media management start-up based in Northern Michigan. It was founded by two unemployed college graduates who have stood on the sidelines saying “why didn’t we come up with that?” for years. Just steps behind popular business concepts like the Snuggie, ketchup flavored potato chips, and the Tea Party movement, we hoped it wouldn’t be long until we successfully tapped into the next hottest trend.

We’ve got a page on Facebook, you know.

When our parents ‘friended’ us we knew Facebook had finally made it to our rural hometown. It didn’t take long for many local businesses to hastily setup Facebook accounts and abandon them just as quickly – not realizing the value of a successful online presence. Social networking is the trend, the biggest #winner of our generation. “Wouldn’t it be neat to update statuses for a living?” we asked. Guess what…it is!

With a little help from the Internet, a lot of help from an entrepreneurial program with the MI SBTDC, and other local mentors, three months of planning was all the time we had before we felt like we had to launch – and beat others to the punch. “Social Media Manager” was a title that hadn’t yet reached our community, another reason why we had to act fast. We have the chance to define the term (locally). What an opportunity!

Services we offer include custom FB app building, optimization for existing pages, daily content maintenance, and various online promotions. We’ve had a great response so far, and success with all of our clients – things are taking off! This blog will be dedicated to trends in social media, Facebook tips, and other things we find interesting. It will be focused on the local and community aspects of social networking for small business, as that is our target market.
