By now more often than not social media policies are being implemented throughout the workplace and schools, all the while our down times are filled with improper etiquette. Unfortunately it will be years before the social rules are settled. I guess it is understandable because the technology has developed so rapidly – not to mention, it involves much of the population.
Social Media in the workplace
This is something that’s implemented in two ways: as a marketing strategy, and as an employee guideline. If either one of them isn’t defined clearly enough, they can work against each other!
Step #1 – Define your company’s social media strategy.
What resources will you use (human and otherwise)? Who is responsible for day to day maintenance? What roles will all other employees play in your overall strategy?
BONUS TIP – Most companies should be open to suggestions from every employee when it comes to their social media efforts. They are consumers too, they may know your audience as well as anybody. They are often on the front lines of your business and can offer some insider type content – very valuable!
Step #2 – What are the rules regarding social media during work hours?
If an employee is not directly involved in your company’s social media campaign, they shouldn’t be accessing social media sites on the clock! This is easy to say, but harder to enforce, especially with mobile capabilities today. Have you added the “social media” section to your employee handbook yet? Better late than never!
ANOTHER TIP – Have consequences for inappropriate use clearly in place – the social media etiquette in our personal lives is all but clear, be clear-cut and fair! No special treatment.
Step #3 – Make your own ‘house rules’
We’ve got to start somewhere, why doesn’t everyone make their own? How do kids learn manners? From their parents and older generations.
In the last 5 years kids have literally been given the world in the palm of their hands, and the social rules that have come with it have spread backwards from the younger generation to the older ones. That is why there are no manners! Eventually it will take shape, but good parents will take responsibility now.
No texting at the table. No Facebook until homework is done. No cell phones after a certain time.
These rules are obviously geared towards children, but even if you don’t have kids you shouldn’t be…
- Talking loudly on a cell phone in public
- Texting and driving
- Having your nose in your phone while you’re with company
- Updating your status multiple times a day
Think about it, what irritates you about other people and their lack of technological etiquette??
