What’s sure to spark fan engagement on a page? Religion, politics, and Justin Bieber of course!

“But I’m still 26 million fans behind Bieber!”

The top 3 most engaging fan pages on Facebook last month were: Jesus Daily, The Bible [PAGE NOW REMOVED], and Justin Bieber (in that order). This is according to allfacebook.com

The rest of the top ten is made up of a combination of entertainment figures and sports organizations. Look for some political campaigns to break through once the presidential race heats up later in the year.

Unless your page is directly related to it, it’s safest to stay away from politically/religiously charged content – you may alienate a part of your fanbase. Your fan page posts are tiny pieces of a continuous conversation you carry with all of your fans – ask yourself “would I say this to my customers face to face?”

One client of ours launched their restaurant with subtle Christian themes and wanted to continue those efforts into their custom fan page. We designed a ‘Sunday Spirit’ tab to showcase the owner’s gratitude toward her customers and give her the ability to reach out to her fan base in a way that she wasn’t able to before. It is updated monthly with her thoughts as she balances running the restaurant and meeting her duties as a Christian. The tab  is there for fans that will enjoy it, and it’s not getting in the way of fans that don’t want to participate.

Social media is all about options, they choose to like your page, and they will choose to unsubscribe if they are offended. What engages your fans most?

Potentially offensive, but we’re taking our chances!
