Anonymous, everyone’s favorite socially-progressive online movement, has reportedly released a statement regarding an upcoming attack on Facebook.

Although Anonymous promotes social justice, they're usually construed as anarchists.

The announcement, in the form of a mysterious YouTube video (Ooh!) goes on to say that the attack will happen on Nov. 5th, of course, referencing Guy Fawkes from the film ‘V for Vendetta’. (Anonymous is widely recognized using Guy Fawkes’ mask as a

calling card.)

But here’s the thing.

Anonymous has hit huge targets before, like Paypal & Mastercard–but they’re not going to go after Facebook. To say that they could

‘kill’ Facebook in one day, and actually shut the site down, is pretty ridiculous. If they were mounting to do anything even close to that–you’d be hearing about it in the news, and the topic would be trending on Twitter before any action was taken.

At least, that’s what I assumed when I read the story. (I’ll admit to following them quite regularly.)

Here’s an update from Mashable:

Update: Anonymous confirmed via a tweet that while some of its members are organizing the upcoming attack against Facebook, the hacker organization as a whole does not necessarily agree with the attack.

Uhh, duh. Media outlets and news sites picked up this story and ran with it. It’s not going to happen. Don’t worry; don’t be scared.

I mean, it’s not like Anonymous themselves said this is a fake…oh, wait:
