On Thursday, Facebook and Storyful announced the launch of FB Newswire, a news aggregate source for journalists and newsrooms. It uses newsworthy social content that is publicly shared on Facebook by individuals and organizations. Facebook’s goal is to make it easier for media organizations and journalists to get verified, up-to-date information, videos and photos and use it to engage and drive their markets.
Storyful searches through content on social media and weeds out valuable, newsworthy content; verifies it with Storyful’s advanced technology and journalistic expertise and makes sure content is accurately sourced. Most of the content will come from “newsmakers, witnesses to events or agencies involved in them”. FB Newswire will be sharing verified content that Storyful has found exclusively on Facebook.
Twitter has been the go-to source for journalists and media to find trending news and now Facebook is honing in on that market. But, even though FB Newswire is aimed at media news organizations, it is available publicly on Facebook as well as on Twitter.
To the average Facebook user, this could mean faster and more reliable information and updates on the latest news developments, and perhaps a way to verify that next article you are tempted to share. For journalists and media organizations, a vast pool of verified and sourced information is now more easily attainable.
