Yesterday, Dec. 29th, was referred to as ‘Dump GoDaddy Day’, also called ‘MoveYourDomain Day’ by registrar sites like Namecheap.com.
Why boycott GoDaddy? It has everything to do with the controversial SOPA (The Stop-Online-Pirating-Act) bill. After being outed as a supporter of the bill, GoDaddy tried to change its stance – to no avail. With sites like GoDaddyBoycott.org, Wikipedia’s own domain transfer from the company, and a lengthy thread on Reddit, the negative publicity didn’t seem like it’d stop.
Things seemed to get worse when Namecheap.com accused GoDaddy of interfering with the domain transfer process – slowing down customers from changing providers.
However, multiple news sources are making claims for both sides; hailing the GoDaddy boycott a success, while others call it a failure.
Ultimately, GoDaddy has pulled its support for SOPA (and PIPA – the Protect IP Act, a watered-down version of the bill that still ‘Kills the Internet’.)

I haven’t heard anything anything about SOPA in a while. When do you think it will rear its ugly head again?
SOPA is constantly being reworked, renamed, and resubmitted – it’s not over by a longshot. I’d suggest checking out reddit.com/r/SOPA/ for the absolute latest!
