Josh Kaufman’s Macbook was stolen this past March. After filing a police report (that quickly went nowhere), he didn’t hesitate to start an investigation of his own. You see, Kaufman had installed Hidden on his Macbook. It’s an app that allows the user–and, in this case, the original owner–of the computer take screenshots and webcam photos remotely.
What ended up happening was quite humorous–Kaufman started an aptly-titled tumblr account: ‘This Guy Has My Macbook’. And, by posting screenshots and photos of the perpetrator, he collected evidence that he would send to police. Kaufman’s plight didn’t gain momentum until May 31st, when he tweeted the Tumblr page. It didn’t take long for the message to go viral, and law enforcement led an investigation after Good Morning America picked up the story and contacted the Oakland police station. 28,400 tweets and 55,000 Facebook likes later, the Macbook was recovered and the thief was arrested.
Be sure to check out the Tumblr page here: This Guy Has My Macbook for some candid (and creepy) photos of the thief.
