Don't let your Twitter account go down the drain

You’ve just registered for Twitter–you finally learned what B2B means–and you’re following Charlie Sheen.

Now what?

Businesses have a lot to gain from running a Twitter account the right way. It’s all about making connections, starting a conversation with customers, and gathering feedback that you’d never normally have access to.

However, if you’ve published 5,000 tweets but only have 20 followers, you’re doing something wrong.

There are lots of aspects to Twitter every business should look at, and we’ll cover them in other posts, but right from the start most businesses are preoccupied with followers.

And if you aren’t, you should be.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are word of mouth with a megaphone–but if no one is listening to what you’re saying, you’re wasting your time. Here’s a few easy ways to build your followers:

  • Follow similar users – depending on your niche, you’ll find lots of businesses with similar interests. Hew to that line and follow whoever you can–or whomever would be interested in your own business. Chances are they’ll follow back. (If they don’t, you can always unfollow them later!)
  • Follow anyone that follows you – If you’re not using a service that automatically does it, you’re missing out–but as long as it’s getting done, you’re good to go.
  • Retweet, mention, & make lists – do anything you can to get the word out–and help others spread what they’re trying to say as well. When you’re following the right the crowd, you’ll have fantastic access to never-ending content that’s pertinent and concise.
  • Don’t follow less-than-desirable users – Even though it’s a good idea to follow as many users as you can, keep in mind that who you’re following says a lot.
  • Remember brand identity – If you’ve got a custom Facebook URL, make sure it matches your Twitter handle. If you’re not mentioning that you have Twitter account on your Facebook page or website, no one will find it.

These are a just a few things every business should do–or at least consider–while trying to utilize Twitter. Once you’ve gotten in the flow of things, you’ll be sending messages, retweeting, and @mentioning like a pro. Remember to keep the conversation going, and keep in mind that a single retweet can go a long way.
