The upstart social media website Vine, took a major hit when it was announced that Instagram would start allowing its users to post videos.

Vine is a website specializing in video clips averaging in length of 6 seconds. The site has been designed by Twitter for use on Twitter.

Instagram is gobbling up Vine’s market share. Inspired by Vine’s success in video sharing, Instagram entered the video sharing market by releasing a platform that allows its users to share video clips up to 15 seconds in length.

Instagram is at an advantage because it is now owned by Facebook. Facebook bought it for $1 billion last April. It is very easy to share things from Instagram to Facebook.

Differences

1.      Instagram has 13 new filters that allow the user to transform a amateur looking home video to a more polished presentation

2.      Vine is still a work in progress. It is still in the beta phase and has bug fixes and updates coming out biweekly.

3.      Vine allows users to share 6-second clips while Instagram allows users to share 15-second clips.

4.      Vine allows the clips to loop while Instagram does not.

5.      Instagram allows the users to pick a frame to use as the cover image.

6.      Instagram is more easily used by first time users.

7.      Vine’s videos are easily shared over Twitter.

8.      Instagram is much more easily shared by Facebook.

9.      Instagram has access to a much larger market share. It has been around a lot longer and already has more than 130 million users and more than 40 million pictures uploaded daily.

10.  Instagram is compatible with more social media sites. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare are easily shared to by Instagram. Vine is limited to Facebook and Twitter.

11.  Both sites had a porn problem. Instagram has managed to clean up their site pretty well but Vine has lagged behind in limiting porn available on its pages.

12.  Instagram changed its terms of service to state that it could sell your personal pictures without your permission. This caused them to lose a bunch of users. They have changed it back since then but the damage had been done.
